“Couldn’t send message,” my phone stated.

Seconds earlier I had hit send on a text message. I tapped resend.

“Couldn’t send message,” announced my phone once more.

I called the number. The line instantly went dead.

Placing the phone on the table in front of me, I sat silently in my chair, staring at the kitchen wall that was covered in pieces of paper containing my two-year-old daughter’s artwork and painted handprints.

By artwork, I mean psycho scribbles.

My brain swirled with confusion, unable to feel anything else. At one point I laughed to myself. I’m not sure why. I continued to sit and stare at the art-covered wall for the next fifteen minutes before retiring to bed.

He hadn’t responded to my emails. My WhatsApp messages remained undelivered, and I’d just discovered I had been blocked on social media. By both him and his mother. Text messaging and calling were my last options.
