I exhaled as my hand released the doorknob and fell to my side. Carefully, I tiptoed forward, making sure not to make a sound. My toddler was finally settled in her bed after insisting she needed another story, Chardonnay, and scream into the abyss.

My body relaxed as I stepped into the kitchen, only to be whipped with a wagging tail. Sammy, my dog, let out a playful growl as he trotted around me in circles.

“Just give me a minute,” I pleaded as I attempted to walk across the room.

Sammy rammed his head into my left knee, causing me to wince, then pulled back to sneeze on my foot.

So now that’s got to be sawed off.

“Ok. Let’s go outside,” I groaned.

It’s fine, I can go eight hours without a sip of water.

He squealed excitedly as he twisted his body and ran towards the back door, almost falling as his old, back legs couldn’t keep up with the rest of his body.

I trudged along behind him.

“Out of the way, Sammy,” I said, nudging him away from the shoes.
