I agree. If you're going to be an ass, just say it. It's not just a little lie either. As you said, it's a whole story. They come back to the story and add to it too. My husband would continue to tell the lie story even when presented with physical evidence that it was a lie.

I'm sorry that you understand this, and therefore have experience of it. It is not pleasant at all.
