Our Couple’s Therapist Was Speechless
His mouth fell open.
There I was, sat next to my oblivious husband, in front of our couple’s therapist. Another week, another session, another round of false hope. I had dragged my reluctant husband to the session, which he agreed to attend as the payments were coming out of my paycheck.
A keeper, I know.
We were yet again discussing how my husband shows little or no respect and empathy for my thoughts and feelings.
I explained my feelings about my husband’s spring break attitude to money, to which he simply nodded. Our couple’s therapist (let’s call him Bill), rephrased my feelings to try and help my husband to understand my point of view.
Ten minutes into the discussion, my husband had still not said a word, only grunted. At some point, I guess he decided Bill and I were worth acknowledging and he responded. He stared blankly at Bill, before offhandedly saying:
“ Why do I have to care how she feels? That upsets her, not me, so it’s not my problem.”
Seriously?
Poor Bill. His mouth dropped open slightly and his jaw moved as though he was speaking but no words came out. He was speechless.
