So this is what I have been told by multiple people, who knows if it is entirely correct:

When someone only stays on your story for less than 30 seconds it counts as a view, not a read. Your view/read ratio impacts how much Medium will pay you for the reads you do get. So if people are clicking on and off your stories quickly (giving one clap and running onto the next like in this case), it means you get paid less for future reads on that story.
