TOXIC FAMILIES

Their Desire for Photos Unnerved Me

I wasn’t comfortable with their requests

I felt my purse vibrate against my hip as I stepped into the wine bar. Pushing through the crowd, I spotted my friends at a table in the middle of the room.

Well, I heard them rather than spotted them.

Fucking extroverts.

After sliding into the empty seat and batting back comments about my dress with sarcastic remarks about their life choices, I dove into my purse. Grasping my phone, I pulled it out and glanced at the screen.

“For fucks sake,” I muttered.

My oldest friend, Sasha looked over to see me staring at my phone.

“Is it your mom telling you that you were a mistake?” Sasha asked nonchalantly.

“No, it’s your mom telling me that you should have been swallowed,” I replied just as nonchalantly.

We both laughed as others around our table choked on their wine. I opened the message as Sasha warned the others that we were just getting started.

“It’s my ex-mother-in-law,” I stated. “Guess what she wants.”

Sasha chuckled and said, “A photo?”
