“So, I got a phone call today,” my fiancee said as he pulled a stack of novels from a cardboard box.

“Yeah….,” I replied as I took the books from him and slid them onto the bookcase in the living room of our new house.

“Yeah,” he echoed, reaching for another of our boxed possessions.

His pause caught my attention and I turned to look at him. He kept his eyes on the box cutter as he sliced along the shiny packing tape.

My smile faded as the realization hit me.

Tilting my head to the side, I asked, “It was them, wasn’t it?”

He nodded.

“Oh, for fucks sake,” I whined, sliding another stack of novels into place on the bookcase. “I hope you told them no,” I said sternly.

“It’s not a big deal. Calm down,” he said with a sigh.

Calm down? I’d rather spiral out of control, thanks.

“Yes, yes it is a big deal. It’s not normal,” I said with a frantic edge to my voice.

“Why is it not normal?” My fiancee asked. “It doesn’t bother me.”
